Many people have asked me if the lyre is good for beginners. Is it easy to learn? Can you teach yourself? Is it easy to pick up without playing another instrument? The answer is yes!
The lyre is one of the simplest instruments to pick up. The layout is straightforward. You don’t have to master complex chords or fancy techniques. It doesn’t have a lot of strings. In short, the lyre is excellent for beginners! So much so that I was playing simple tunes the first day I got mine.
Here is a breakdown of why the lyre harp is easier than many beginner instruments, such as the piano, recorder, violin, or guitar.
If you don’t want to read the article, watch the video explaining everything here:
1. Few Strings
The lyre has much fewer strings than its cousin, the harp. A little 7-string or 10-string lyre can produce some lovely and heartfelt melodies. One with 16 strings is sufficient for a huge variety of music. Check out this YouTube channel to see the wonders you can do with just 16 strings.
2. Simple Arrangement
The strings are laid out in plain sight and in order. You don’t have to memorize finger positions like with the recorder. You don’t need both hands like with the guitar or ukulele. One finger is all you need to play a song. Of course, there are lyre techniques but you don’t need to master them to start.
3. Lovely Sound
To sound decent on the violin or guitar would take tons of practice. But not the lyre! After proper tuning, the lyre sounds beautiful right away. There’s something motivating about plucking a string and hearing the resonance rings out.
4. Light and Portable
The lyre does not require a lot of finger strength because it’s small and lightweight. Even little children can play it! In fact, the Kinder Lyre is commonly used in Waldorf education for small kids. The adult would model playing the lyre before giving it to a child.
5. No Music Knowledge is Required
You can teach yourself the lyre harp without knowing music theory or how to read sheet music. There are many online resources for beginners. Some give you the notes and all you need is to play the corresponding string on your lyre.
Having said that, learning music theory is always a helpful skill to help you progress down the road. I’m not only talking about the lyre but about any instrument. But with the lyre, you don’t need music theory to start. 🙂
